As we age, the skin and soft tissues of the face naturally lose elasticity leading to a gravity-driven downward descent. This drooping of the brow area can cause sagging of the skin around the eyes resulting in a hooded appearance of top eyelid. Crow lines can also be accentuated and the natural arch of the eyebrow lost, creating a permanent look of concern. Nowadays, there are a myriad of surgical and non-surgical treatments to tighten the brow and rejuvenate the forehead and eyebrows. An eyebrow lift, also known as a brow lift, is a popular option for those wanting to achieve a younger, more rejuvenated appearance. Patients can tighten the upper area of the face by either repositioning the skin using surgical techniques or via non-surgical interventions using the muscle relaxant injectable, Botox.
A brow lift, also known as an eyebrow lift or a forehead lift, is a cosmetic procedure that reduces the appearance of ageing of the forehead and brow area by raising and tightening the skin. A rejuvenated appearance is achieved with the smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles and a reduction in the degree of sagging skin.
There are a large number of brow lift treatments available, all of which differ according to the incision site, for surgical brow lifts, or the type of injectable used, for non-surgical brow lifts. Your consultant will discuss your treatment options with you during your initial consultation. The best course of action will be determined based on the level of premature ageing, the condition of your skin and your personal preferences and expectations.
Also called a chemical brow lift, a non-surgical brow lift involves a series of injectable treatments applied to the area around the brow and eyes. These injectables work to temporarily relax and paralyse the muscles of the upper brow area, preventing them from contracting. This achieves a considerable lift to the skin with rejuvenating results without the need for surgery.
A surgical brow lift is an outpatient procedure that physically removes excess skin and tissues of the brow area and repositions and elevates the skin and underlying muscles. A traditional surgical brow lift involves an incision across the scalp, either along or behind the hairline. An endoscopic brow lift, on the other hand, uses the guidance of a small camera called an endoscope to lift and elevate the skin and muscles. This technique requires much smaller incisions and typically leaves less scarring than the traditional surgical methods .
Whilst achieving similar anti-ageing effects, surgical and non-surgical eyebrow lifts have vast differences. A non-surgical brow lift has a considerably shorter down time with zero scarring but the results are only temporary as the injectables are broken down by the body over time. The surgical approach offers a permanent, long term solution, although with this it brings a longer post-surgery recovery period and some degree of scarring.
With a chemical brow lift, patients can expect to continue their normal daily activities immediately after treatment. A surgical eyebrow lift, however, is a much more advanced procedure and therefore downtime is required for the body to heal. Most patients who have undergone a surgical brow lift find that they are able to comfortably resume some level of light activity immediately after the surgery. However, we do recommend taking two weeks off work to allow adequate rest and recovery. Computer use is not restricted however, and so home office is possible where applicable.
Brow lifts are mostly suited to men and women who have developed a low, sagging brow area over time. A loss in elasticity of the brow area lowers the brow line and patients find that they have a constant need to raise their eyebrows. This repeated action only then further enhances the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles of the forehead. Depending on the extent of the sagging of the skin and lines and creases, a surgical or non-surgical brow lift may be better suited to you. An initial consultation with our trained cosmetic surgeon will assess your individual needs and recommend the best course of action.
