What Is A Carbon Laser Facial?
A carbon facial, or carbon peel, is one of the most effective measures for deep cleansing the skin. The results are achieved by using a special laser in combination with a cleansing mask made of activated charcoal. Also known as the “Hollywood Peel” thanks to its popularity amongst A-listers, the interplay between carbon nanoparticles of the charcoal mask and the high energy laser beam results in cleansing of depths topical cleanses can’t reach.
How Does It Work?
The therapeutic effect of the carbon facial mask is based on the ability of the nanoparticles of carbon to penetrate deep into the pores of the skin. When the laser is passed over the mask, this excites the nanoparticles effectively making them “explode” and vaporise from the surface of the skin. This light ablation of the carbon particles lifts deep debris from within the pores removing excess oil, dirt and other deep impurities.
In addition to deep pore cleansing, the laser energy also targets and heats the deeper dermal layers of the skin, specifically destroying melanin, the cells that give the skin colour. Destruction of these cells reduces pigmentation and also stimulates regeneration and deep remodelling of the skin.
What Happens During Carbon Laser Facial Treatment?
Before the treatment, the skin is cleansed and the carbon mask is applied to the face. Once the mask has dried, a handheld device is used to project laser beams across the face. As each laser beam passes over the skin, a slight pop or zapping noise can be heard as the carbon particles explode and vaporise. A slight pinching may be felt, but pain during the procedure is minimal. Local anaesthetic is not necessarily needed.
What Can A Carbon Laser Facial Treat?
Popular targets for the Carbon Laser include deep unclogging of pores, the reduction in pigmentation spots, the smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles and the relief from acne and acne scars.
When Can I Expect Results?
An even appearance in skin tone can be seen immediately after the treatment with skin feeling freshened and tighter. However, the full benefits of a carbon laser facial are seen after successful completion of a full treatment plan, typically involving 4-6 sessions. Each session lasts approximately one hour and intervals of at least 2-3 weeks is needed for the skin to heal before the next treatment.
Can A Carbon Facial Be Used To Treat Stubborn Acne?
The deep cleansing action of a Carbon Laser Facial make it a great treatment for stubborn acne. Carbon has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and can reach deep into the pores at levels that topical medicines cannot achieve alone. After a full course of treatment, patients can expect a significant amount of relief from acne as well as the reduced and controlled production of sebum and reduced areas of inflammation. To prevent further acne outbreaks, regular treatments are recommended as part of a maintenance skincare routine.
Who Is A Suitable Candidate For A Carbon Facial?
A Carbon Facial will only treat minor, superficial skin imperfections. Deeper pigmentation and more advanced acne may need additional laser resurfacing treatments to yield effective results.
Patients suffering from acute inflammatory skin diseases, skin cancer or acute herpes are not suitable for the treatment. In addition, carbon laser treatments are not recommended for those who are pregnant or breast feeding. Full suitability will be assessed by our specialist dermatologist during your initial consultation.
