Marionette lines describe the wrinkles or folds that run vertically from the corners of the mouth towards the chin. They usually appear in combination with a downward drooping of the corners of the mouth which together, can give the face a constant grim, dissatisfied expression.
As we age, we experience a significant amount of facial fat repositioning and bone resorption. This creates sagging skin, that no longer springs back as quickly as it used to. Marionette lines, nasolabial fold and jowls, the sagging of the skin just below the jawline or chin, can age the lower part of the face considerable.
Dermal fillers for marionette lines can be particularly rejuvenating for the face as a whole. Sagging skin provides more structural support and the youthful plumpness and volume of the face is restored.
Marionette lines are the lines that extend vertically from the corners of the mouth down to the chin. They get their name from the classic French marionette puppets as they give a puppet-like appearance to the face. Severe marionette lines can also collect pools of saliva, producing sores and redness in the creases.
Direct application of dermal filler to marionette lines can be a successful treatment approach. This will plump out the area and fill creases and lines. However, the key is creating good structural support for the lower areas of the face. The sagging and laxity experienced here only make the marionette lines stronger and more defined.

Dermal fillers used for marionette lines are not permanent and all have a high and well-establish safety profile. Depending on the treatment approach, the area will be injected with either a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler, such as Juvederm or Restylane, or a calcium-based filler Radiesse. Radiesse has the advantage of being a strong skin remodelling agent with long-lasting results, but it is not dissolvable and so results are non-reversible.
